Chapter 88 I’m Scared
After finally descending the mountain, Caroline struggled to move forward, her head heavy and her stomach sick. She lifted her numb feet and trudged toward the distant light. But as she took two steps, darkness engulfed her vision, and she fell face–first into the snow.
Back at Villa Rosa, Daniella sat in the living room, her heart filled with panic. Nic had informed her that the confidential information hadn’t been sold at all. However, he still demanded the 70,000 dollars from her within three days.
She was contemplating how to ask Evan for the money when a commotion outside the door caught her attention.
Quickly standing up, Daniella’s eyes widened when she saw Evan’s fierce expression. Instantly, the thought of asking for money vanished from her mind. She hurriedly approached him and grabbed his arm, her voice filled with concern. “What’s wrong, Evan? You look terrible.” Property © of NôvelDrama.Org.
“Let go,” he said coldly, causing her to retract her hands in fear.
Timidly, she looked at him, her voice tinged with a sense of injustice. “Don’t be like that, Evan. I’m
scared.”
“From now on, don’t go to the office without my permission,” he replied without even glancing at
her, then promptly headed upstairs.
Daniella’s heart jolted. Could it be that Evan had discovered something? Nervously biting her lip,
she noticed that Caroline hadn’t returned home. After pondering for a moment, she came to a
realization.
Evan must have had a fight with Caroline, which was why he returned home in such a furious
state. Caroline’s actions had made him wary, hence his instruction for Daniella to stay away from
the office to avoid getting involved in any trouble.
A smirk formed on Daniella’s face as she entertained her thoughts.
It seemed that even fate was on her side. Caroline’s absence didn’t matter anymore. She had
already achieved her target.
Taking advantage of their absence, she sneaked into Evan’s room and found a few strands of
Caroline’s hair on the vanity.
Tomorrow, when she stayed at the Xander Residence, she would leave the hair on the comb. Her
plan was foolproof!
In the room, Evan sat on the couch, tightly gripping Caroline’s phone. He couldn’t help but think how manipulative she was to purposely leave her phone in his car.
After a brief moment of silence, he suddenly stood up and walked over to the window. His gaze fell upon the falling snow, and his expression turned grim.
The north was experiencing a snowstorm, with temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Celsius. It would be challenging for anyone to navigate the harsh conditions, let alone endure the strong
winds and snow.
Evan pursed his lips in concern and, feeling irritable, pulled out his phone to call Reuben.
“Bring someone to find Caroline on Mount Pilgrim in the north,” he instructed.
Reuben was taken aback. ‘Mr. Jordan left Ms. Shenton on Mount Pilgrim?!”
He quickly responded. “I’ll get to it right away, Mr. Jordan!”
At 1 a.m., Reuben found Caroline buried under a thick layer of snow. Fortunately, she was still
alive. He quickly brought her to Villa Rosa, where Evan was waiting in the living room.
Evan’s heart squeezed when he saw Reuben carrying the pale Caroline inside. Panic was evident in Reuben’s voice as he spoke. “Mr. Jordan! We don’t know how long Ms. Shenton was buried in
snow. Her body temperature is dangerously low.”
Fear flickered in Evan’s eyes as he hurriedly approached to take her in his arms. When he
touched her hands, he could feel how icy cold they were. Panic overwhelming him, he rushed upstairs, urging, “Bring Lily here and call the doctor!”
In the room, Evan removed Caroline’s wet coat and wrapped her in a blanket. Lily was taken aback
when she entered the room. “Sir, Ms. Shenton…”
Evan’s voice boomed, cutting her off. “Fetch hot water to wipe her body!”
Lily quickly obeyed his orders, her mind racing. If Evan hadn’t explicitly stated otherwise, she
would have thought that Caroline was already dead. Her face was so pale, resembling that of a
lifeless person.
As the hot water was brought, Evan snatched the towel from Lily’s hands and began wiping
Caroline’s body. He meticulously wiped from her head to her toes, repeating the process again and
again until the doctor arrived.
The doctor let out a sigh after examining Caroline. “Mr. Jordan, Ms. Shenton’s body has always
been on the weak side. Given the severity of this cold, it will be challenging to nurse her back to
full health.”
Evan’s frustration boiled over, and he snapped at the doctor. “Did I call you here just to hear this?!”
The doctor was taken aback by Evan’s outburst but quickly composed himself. “I apologize, Mr.
Jordan. I will provide you with a list of foods that Ms. Shenton should consume to aid in her
Evan’s jaw clenched unusually hard as he continued rubbing Caroline’s cold hands with his palms. Regret consumed him as he looked at the woman who lay so still, almost as if she were dead. Why had he left her there? Regardless of her mistakes, he shouldn’t have abandoned her alone.
Three days later, Caroline woke up in a daze. As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw the man sitting on the nearby couch. Stubble adorned his chin, and his hair was disheveled. Dark circles under his eyes betrayed his lack of sleep, and weariness marked his gaze. She quickly averted her gaze and closed her eyes once more.
He brought her back?
She really couldn’t bear his way of tormenting her and then trying to make it up to her.
