“Please, don’t.” Jake immediately tapped Rachel’s cup. He wasn’t accustomed to her being so polite. He preferred the Rachel who was indifferent and quick with her comebacks.

“Alright, let’s consider this matter settled!” Laura clapped and added, “Thank you for understanding, Mr. Webson. We truly appreciate it. If there’s anything you need in the future, we’ll do everything in our power to help.”

Laura, being an experienced manager, delivered her lines with practiced perfection. Her smooth, reassuring words left Jake feeling more at ease.

Millie was about to take a sip of water when her phone buzzed with a message.

Hazel wrote, “Dr. Caldwell, Sonny is in critical condition. Please return immediately.”

Millie immediately stood up and announced, “I have to go. There’s an emergency at the hospital.”

Before anyone could say a word, she had already closed the door behind her. Rachel froze, surprised by her hasty departure.

When Millie arrived at the hospital, Lainey was already there.

“What’s the situation?” Millie asked while hurrying to put on her white coat. She then rushed toward

the ward.

Lainey seemed somewhat bewildered as she answered, “They said there’s a foreign object blocking his airway, and he can’t breathe.”

“Huh? Has anyone been in his ward? He hasn’t eaten all afternoon, so how could something get stuck Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.

in his airway?”

Millie pushed open the ward door and saw Hazel and Vanessa attending to Sonny.

“Dr. Xander, you’re here too!”

Millie was surprised to see ssa, and Vanessa nodded in acknowledgment. She was working the

night shift.

“The patient’s vital signs are declining. His blood pressure has been dropping consistently. We’ve checked and found no foreign object in his airway,” Vanessa reported to Lainey as she handed over

the case.

Lainey quickly assessed Sonny’s eyes and reviewed the readings on the monitor. Both his blood pressure and heart rate were decreasing.

“Dr. Quinn, the heart has stopped,” Hazel reported quickly.

Lainey commanded, “Get the defibrillator ready and prepare the adrenaline.”

Millie immediately wheeled in the defibrillator while Hazel administered the adrenaline.

“Step back,” Lainey instructed as she rubbed the defibrillator pads and checked the machine. The indicators on the monitor were nearly flatlining.

Millie frowned. She looked at the man on the bed, her expression growing more troubled.

“Dr. Quinn, I’ll take it from here,” she offered.

Lainey nodded and made space for Millie. Her efforts were relentless.

Five or six minutes ticked by, and the tension in the room was palpable. Yet, Millie refused to let go of the defibrillator. At that moment, her forehead was glistening with sweat.

Just as the monitor flatlined and Lainey was about to give up, the machine suddenly started beeping. Everyone turned to look as Sonny’s heartbeat began to return.

In the next second, Millie continued with chest compressions. As the readings began to improve, a thought crossed her mind, and she suddenly called out, “Dr. Xander, I’m exhausted. Can you take over?

Vanessa nodded and quickly stepped in to take over.

Once the indicators stabilized, Millie finally left the ward to catch her breath. Lainey patted her on the shoulder.

When Millie looked up, Lainey flashed her a smile and praised, “You remained composed and didn’t give up. Well done!”

Right then, Vanessa emerged from the ward and saw the scene. Millie sprang to her feet upon seeing her. “Dr. Xander.”

Vanessa pursed her lips and said bluntly, “He’s stable now, but he won’t live much longer.”

Millie appeared puzzled. So, Vanessa handed her the full examination report for Sonny.

The results revealed that his organs were severely damaged, especially his heart and liver. At that point, Sonny was no longer in a condition to undergo heart surgery.

“As long as you’ve done your best,” Lainey reassured them while patting their shoulders.

Millie checked the time and realized it was already 10:00 pm. They had been at it for a long while. “Dr. Xander, why don’t you go home and be with Jasper? I’ll cover for you,” Millie suggested. But Vanessa shook her head. “It’s okay. Jasper can manage by himself.”
