Nina’s lips turned up into a gentle smile. She honestly looked entirely different now. The innocence and purity that once filled her eyes were gone.

Although she had a smile, there was no sign of happiness in her eyes. Instead, there was a sense of coldness and distance.

Cynthia thought Nina had changed a lot. Her appearance hadn’t changed, yet it felt like she had become a completely different person.

Jonathan’s gaze slowly moved downward, finally settling on Nina’s leg beneath the hem of her dress. Under the black skirt was a beautiful crystal shoe, but there was only one.

Jonathan’s eyebrows furrowed slightly. His tone remained steady, saying, “Nina, you shouldn’t be in a place like this.”

Nina’s smile grew wider. She asked, “Did I ruin the moment between you and Cynthia?” Nina playfully lifted her skirt, revealing the empty space beneath.

Jonathan spoke up, “Have you forgotten who Whitney is?” Over the years, Nina had many narrow escapes from Whitney. She always stayed away from places where Whitney was likely to appear. But today, Nina came alone.

Nina was unimpressed, a smirk appearing at the corner of her eye. She said, “No matter what Whitney plans to do to me, Mr. Bennett, you’ll still help me, won’t you?”

Jonathan’s frown deepened a bit. He wrapped an arm around Cynthia’s shoulder and said softly, “I’ll still say the same thing: I can protect you for now, but not forever. Also, remember that Cynthia saved the day today; you should thank her.”

Nina finally looked at Cynthia, her eyes seemingly cold. She once really liked Cynthia, at first sight.

Cynthia was carefree, confident, charming, and captivating. Nina wanted to be like Cynthia. Back then, Nina thought Cynthia was radiant, shining brightly. Nina wanted very much to be close to Cynthia.

During the filming period, Nina felt it was one of the few free times in her life. However, now, recalling that time, Nina could only feel it was filled with deceit, secrets, hypocrisy, and insincerity.

Nina stared at Cynthia with a sarcastic smile. She said, “Cynthia, I haven’t had the chance to congratulate you and Mr. Bennett yet. By the way, I made a wedding gift for you myself, and I hope you like it.”

After that, Nina took a wooden box out of her bag and handed it to Cynthia. Cynthia showed no expression as she naturally reached out to take it. Upon opening it, her brow furrowed sharply.

It was a music box. Inside the transparent glass, there was a zombie bride. The bride’s face looked skeletal, and she was wearing a blood–stained wedding dress. The most striking thing was the bride inside only had one leg.

Foamy, blood–stained bubbles swirled around the bride like snowflakes. The music was incredibly eerie.

Jonathan saw it, too, and immediately took the box. His face showed evident anger, and his voice became even colder. He said, “Nina! Don’t push it too far.!”

Nina burst into laughter and said, “Me, push it too far? Let me tell you, this is just the beginning. The pain you both caused me, I’ll return it tenfold or even a hundredfold!” With that, Nina turned her wheelchair around and went away.

Jonathan’s expression was grim. Cynthia stepped forward, gently patting his back to comfort him, “Forget it, don’t bother with her. Sometimes, what you think is right might not be good for others.”

Cynthia understood what Jonathan was feeling at the moment. He didn’t have no feelings for Nina. On the contrary, his feelings ran deep.

For many years, Jonathan thought of Nina as another part of himself. They shared similar hardships, which was why Jonathan tried his hardest to protect Nina, just like he would have protected the weak and helpless version of himself from the past.

Jonathan hoped that once Nina was strong and independent, she would be able to handle things on her own. But things didn’t turn out as Jonathan wished. Nina’s situation now was truly unfortunate.

Yet now, Nina blamed the tragic turn of her life on Jonathan. This undoubtedly left Jonathan feeling deeply disappointed.

Jonathan sighed deeply and casually placed the music box on the dessert table beside him. He said, “Looks like we have another rival to deal with. Are you worried?”

Cynthia shook her head and said, “Just be more careful in the future.”

Tonight wasn’t all bad. Cynthia bumped into Jessie and Ethan. Meeting old friends brightened her mood.

After chatting with Cynthia for a bit, Jessie wandered among the dessert tables. Ethan, however, seemed lost in thought.

Cynthia clinked glasses with Ethan. She said, “Your latest movie is a hit both in the box office and reviews. It’s a huge success, so why the gloomy face?”

Ethan glanced around to make sure nobody was listening and leaned closer to Cynthia. He said, “Cynthia, there’s something that’s been bothering me lately, and I’d appreciate your help.”

Cynthia was surprised. She asked, “We’re not even in the same business. How could I possibly help you?” Recently, Ethan was at the peak of fame, with renowned directors worldwide scrambling to work with him.

His value in the entertainment industry was sky–high. Even Whitney, who usually looked down on people from the entertainment industry, was nice to Ethan earlier.

Cynthia seemed to have realized something. She asked, “Did Whitney take an interest in you?” Text © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.

Ethan was taken aback. He replied, “What are you saying?”

Cynthia let out a small laugh, thinking it was unlikely, too. She said, “Oh, nothing, just joking.” She took a sip of her wine and continued, “So, tell me, what’s bothering you?”

Ethan lowered his head and said quietly, “My girlfriend isn’t talking to me anymore.”

Cynthia almost spat out her wine. The famous movie king was worried about such a small relationship issue.

When they filmed the variety show together, Cynthia knew that Ethan was dating someone and that his girlfriend wasn’t from the industry.

The media had been trying hard to dig up information. But Ethan had protected his girlfriend very well, so the media never found out who she was.

Cynthia looked helpless. She said, “Ethan, if your girlfriend won’t talk to you, there’s nothing I can do about it. I don’t even know her.”

Ethan suddenly looked up. He said, “You do know her.”

Cynthia looked surprised. She asked, “I know her? Who is she?”

Ethan looked around again to make sure no one was paying attention to them. He leaned closer to Cynthia’s ear and whispered two words.

Cynthia was utterly shocked. She said, “Ethan! Yasmine is only nineteen this year! How could you do this?”

Ethan was already twenty–eight and had been a major figure in the entertainment industry for a decade. It was not that he was old, but the age difference was significant.

Ethan said his girlfriend was Yasmine. This was something Cynthia never expected.
