Waking up I glance around.
I’m still in the sitting room, and a fluffy throw covers my body.
“He’s fine. Just needs to be careful. The guy is dead, at least we don’t have to worry about chasing the guy around and trying to find him.” I hear Calix and stay quiet.
“You say he’s fine, but he wasn’t this morning Cal.” I hear Marcello.
“I meant physically Marc, not mentally. Give him a chance to come back to reality. Don’t push him, Marc, I know you. Don’t tell him he shouldn’t have tried to protect you, had he not you would be dead.”
Calix’s words shock me.
“I won’t, I didn’t even see him coming at me with the knife,” Marcello explains.
“Well, I guess you stay here today. Keep a watch on him, Marc, he might slip again. Doubtful but we never know.” Calix sounds hurt, and I want to know what has happened but at the same time, I don’t want to
know.
“When do you plan to wake her Cal?” He means me. © 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
“Soon, she missed breakfast but she couldn’t fall asleep so was up late. until she literally dropped.” He laughs slightly.
“Dropped? I swung that fucking door open and it broke the unit and she didn’t even flinch. She was dead to the world. I will cook, then.

when you wake her she can eat.” The room falls quiet again, after a few minutes I shift slightly and try to act like I am waking up.
“Afternoon puddin.” Calix smiles at me.
“Afternoon?” I look around confused.
“Yeah, you slept through breakfast. Get showered and changed. Then food, and well, work.” Nodding I walk through to my room, getting sorted. I opt for a business skirt and shirt, along with peepholes seen as I am spending the day with Calix. Getting to the door I stop. Walking back I get changed.
While it’s tempting to taunt, I won’t not today. Something happened with Demitri so I will behave..
Walking back out I see them all sitting at the table eating. Demitri seems distant. His eyes fixed on his plates he doesn’t even look up as I walk towards them.
Marcello and Calix smile at me as I sit down. Glancing towards Demitri I wait, but he doesn’t budge.
“Eat, then work puddin.” Calix smiles as he pushes the plate towards
1. me. I sit and eat as Calix and Marcello talk. A short while later Demitri stands and walks out, my eyes following him.
“Is he okay?”
“Sure is, cub, he just needs some time.” Marcello smiles at me.
“What happened?” I look towards Calix, hoping that he tells me. I know something has and it seems to have made Demitri distance
himself.
“I got a call this morning, early. Went to the bar, it was meant to be a

quick resolve. Turned out to be a hoax, someone who had wanted me dead for a few years was there. I was too busy trying to find out who had called, I didn’t see him lunge for me.”
My eyes widen at Marcello’s words.
“Demitri had come with me, he saw the guy move and jumped in the way. The knife went through his arm, had he not been there it was aimed at my heart.”
I listen to his words. So he would be dead, had Demitri’s arm not been there, it would have gone into his chest. Why does the thought of that scare me?
“So he’s hurt?” I look towards where Demitri went.
“Not physically, emotionally, mentally yes puddin.” I look at Calix confused.
“Look, what Cal said is true. He needs time cub, by the time you two get back from work he will be his usual self no doubt.”
I don’t bother answering, instead, I watch as Calix and Marcello talk, before Calix stands and pulls me out with him.
Driving he stays quiet, and I feel like I am missing something, their quiet whispers and only half conversations confuse me.
“Okay, so let’s get inside and you can help.” Calix stops, and I look at the building. It’s the same one from before. Walking in he guides us to the lift. Once again we go to the top floor, the first few offices are clear with no one in as we walk past, and getting further in I see some offices that are clearly used regularly.
Calix walks into one, pulling me along.

“So what do you need me to do?” I look at him waiting.
“Sit right here, and listen. I’m going through the business takings, people’s tabs, debts and such. It’s a good way to help you with math. So sit.” He pulls a chair over and waits. Walking over I sit down.
“Right, so we’re going to go through each business, look at the profit, and loss. See which ones are taking hits, and figure out why.” Sitting he explains it to me, and I find myself immersed in the work. We don’t tend to talk except when he explains things to me or when I ask him to clarify things.
He ends up stuck on one business, constantly going through it and seems to be struggling to find the issue.
His button is undone on his shirt, and his tie is barely tied anymore ast he keeps pulling it looser the longer it takes. I can see he is stressed, the more he tries to figure it out the more he stresses.
“Hold.” I look at him confused. “The paper, I am boiling and need the fan on. Hold the damn paper.” I stare at him shocked by his outburst.
Moving he picks me up and places me on the desk so I am sitting on the corner of the paper, placing the cup on the other corner he turns on
the fan.
I watch as he writes, or almost scribbles across it, and each time he does his anger grows.
“Remember these dates. 15th, 19th and 21st. Don’t forget them!”
I nod listening to his words. 15th, 19th, 21st. I watch as he goes. through the papers again, circling someone’s name repeatedly.
“Remember eight thousand.” I nod and try remembering it, plus the dates.

“Second date?” He looks at me waiting.
“Erm.” 15th, “19th” I am glad I remembered as right now he looks ready to kill someone.
“Remember twenty–six thousand. Next date?” He looks at me.
“31st.” I sit and wait. “No, 21st, sorry.” Shit. He shakes his head going back again.
“Amounts?” He looks at me.
Crap, come on. He sits waiting and my mind fights to remember. “First was eight thousand and then twenty–six thousand.” What is going on?
“So eighty–five thousand over three dates.” He screams and throws. everything off the desk. “Stay!” I jump at the loudness of his voice, moving I climb from the desk.
“No.” What the hell?
“Just stay, I need to make a call.” He storms out and I stand waiting. I can see him on the phone ranting and shouting. I can only assume eighty–five thousand is money lost. Maybe owed? I don’t know but he isn’t happy that is for sure, so whoever it is about I doubt they will live to see tonight.
