Chapter 1291
Gemma was saved.
Nina, pale from blood loss, had no color left in her lips. She used the table for support as she stood up, swaying slightly as she moved toward the hospital room.
"Ma'am, please sit and rest here for a bit. We need to give you a transfusion. In your current state, you won't make it to the room, let alone take a few more steps without fainting," the nurse said, quickly grabbing Nina's arm.
Nina knew she wasn't in the best shape. She didn't push herself, instead taking a seat to rest. After drinking some glucose water to regain her strength, she went to see her daughter. Gemma's condition had improved. Her fever had come down slightly.
"Her temperature should return to normal in about three hours. If it spikes again, come find me immediately," the doctor instructed carefully.
Nina committed every word to memory. After the doctor left, she sat by her daughter's side, gently stroking Gemma's forehead as she murmured, "Sweetheart, please wake up soon." Meanwhile, on his way home, Nash called his assistant. "Check into Mrs. Watson's background and get it to me as soon as possible."
With only a few people in their household, it was impossible to believe Orion could have harmed his sister. That left Mrs. Watson as the only suspect.
As for Hope, she was Orion's age and too young to have done something so heartless. Neither Nash nor Nina suspected her in the slightest.
Nash arrived home and stepped out of the car just as Orion rushed up, worry etched on his face. "Dad, how's Gemma?"
"She's okay. Once her fever's completely gone, she can come home. You should rest a bit. I need to have a word with Mrs. Watson." Nash patted Orion's shoulder reassuringly. He then headed to the back garden with Mrs. Watson.RêAd lat𝙚St chapters at Novel(D)ra/ma.Org Only
"I'm so sorry, sir. I should have noticed sooner that something was wrong with Miss Gemma," Mrs. Watson said nervously, twisting her apron in her hands.
She was terrified that Nash had come home to hold her accountable. This was Mr. York, and his daughter was part of a prominent family. If he wanted to investigate further, how could she bear the responsibility?
Seeing her unease, Nash couldn't help but suspect more.
If she had nothing to hide, why would she look so guilty?
His gaze sharpened, and his voice was stern. "What did you feed Gemma today?"
"Just her formula. I even warmed it up ahead of time," Mrs. Watson answered honestly.
"You're certain you didn't give her anything else? If I find out otherwise, you know there will be consequences," Nash warned.
Mrs. Watson nodded. "You can trust
me, Mr. York. I'd never do something so terrible. If you have doubts, go ahead and investigate, or even ask my previous employers. They can vouch for my character."
In her line of work, reputation was everything. Mrs. Watson knew this well. She had always been diligent, no matter whose child she was caring for, never allowing even a hint of negligence.
The York family paid her generously,
more than twice what she could
earn as a nanny elsewhere. She
treated Gemma with utmost caret
worrying constantly about doing everything right and being there for her every need.
