Hunter's gaze flicked to the boss's hand, his expression as cold as stone. The boss quickly yanked his hand away, shaken by Hunter's icy stare.
Just then, the door swung open, and a woman's soft voice chimed in, "Hunter, you didn't even wait for me! Rushed up here on your own, huh?"
Hearing Jenna's voice, Mia froze, recalling the office gossip Mandy had mentioned yesterday that someone bought HH Law Firm as a gift for their fiancée. She had wondered if it might have been Zac Ford, but now the answer was clear. It was Hunter. Yesterday had been Jenna's birthday and this was her gift.
Her suspicions were confirmed when Hunter spoke in his calm, collected voice, "The firm's yours to manage. Staff assignments, organization-handle it however you like. If you need support, reach out. Any office items or setup, tell Sam."
Mia felt a sinking sensation in her chest, a bad feeling creeping in. Jenna, a dance major, was clearly here to be just a decoration and probably to make Mia's life difficult. Wasn't Hunter indulging her a bit too much?
"Thank you, Hunter. I love this birthday gift!" Jenna said, holding his hand with a sweet smile and eyes full of admiration. "He's so handsome and generous. Such a pity he's someone else's husband," she thought.Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
Turning her attention to Mia, Jenna's face lit up with a polite smile. "Attorney Smith, I've heard so much about you. Looking forward to working together!" She addressed Mia in the same friendly tone she had used with Hunter. Mia couldn't help but wonder if Jenna had rehearsed this.
Fighting back her frustration, Mia fixed Hunter with a hard stare and asked, word by word, "Hunter, what are you doing?"
As if showing up together to get under her skin wasn't enough, now Hunter was making sure Jenna was in her face at work every day. He really knew how to twist the knife.
Hunter glanced at Mia, clearly irritated by her reaction. "Jenna has a law degree and is a licensed attorney. You've been with HH Law Firm for four years, so you have the connections and experience to support her work. And I expect you to keep personal feelings out of the office. Acting like this isn't professional."
Mia's chest tightened, her eyes stinging as she fought back the rising heat of frustration. Four years of relentless work to reach where she was now, only to be told to fall in line behind a showpiece. Hunter knew exactly how to make it sting.
"Attorney Smith," Jenna's voice was sweet as honey, reaching out with a light touch to Mia's arm, "I'm the new team leader of the Divorce Division starting today, so I'll need your help!"
Mia glared at Hunter, her lips curling into a bitter smile. "You two are disgusting," she said before storming out.
The boss witnessed the scene unfold, quickly taking his leave with an expression of shock and regret. If he had known Mia had this connection to Hunter, he would have sent her to pitch to Genesis Corporation. That alone could bring in millions in contracts for the firm but Mia kept it way too well hidden.
Back in the office, Jenna tugged on Hunter's sleeve with a hesitant look. "Actually, there's a local school looking for a dance instructor. Maybe I could go there to teach dance to kids, and Mia could help manage the firm here?"
Hunter frowned, his voice stern. "You're pregnant, Jenna, Dancing right now isn't an option. Are you trying to hurt yourself?"
"But Mia clearly doesn't like me. I'm her supervisor now, and if she doesn't cooperate, it could cause tension. You're already busy, and if she brings her frustration home to you, it'll make things even harder." Jenna looked up at him, her voice soft and pleading. Hunter pressed his lips together, exasperated. "Just focus on your responsibilities here. I'll handle Mia."
Jenna's eyes sparkled with gratitude. "Thank you, Hunter. You're always so good to me."
