Chapter 84: Are You Sure?
Clare came back to his senses and smiled faintly. He sat beside Daisy. Daisy was a little evasive. She looked at the man with an innocent smile in front of her. She swallowed her saliva and then sat down as if nothing had happened. She took out some corncobs from a bag beside her and put them in the stove. Before she could light the fire, she heard Clare ask, “What are you doing?”This belongs © NôvelDra/ma.Org.
“I’m kindling a fire,” Daisy answered matter-of-factly. However, when she tilted her head slightly, she saw that Clare was looking at her in surprise as if she had done something wrong.
Daisy thought that he didn’t know why she was lighting a fire, so she slowly explained, “This is not in the big city. We have to use a big pot to cook. I’m just lighting a fire to heat it up.”
“I know.” Clare smiled gently and then added, “I want to ask you what you want to cook.”
Daisy was stunned and her movements paused for a moment. She looked at Clare for five seconds before putting corncobs at the bottom of the pot. Her face was a little red from embarrassment and she replied in a low voice, “In this fishing village, we rely on the sea. There are oysters that have just been fished up in the pot, and they can be eaten after being stewed for a while.”
Clare replied with a simple “okay” and then closed his eyes. He was so quiet that it was as if he did not exist at all.
The fire burned quickly, making Daisy’s face redden. Not long after, the water in the pot started to boil. She stood up and wanted to take off the lid, but unexpectedly, she was hit by the sudden hot air. She let go of it instinctively. When the lid fell, there was a loud sound.
The noise disturbed the silent Clare. He opened his eyes and said gently, “Go wash your face with cold water.”
Daisy turned back and glanced at Clare. She felt a little resistant to him in her heart. Compared to him, she was more like a person in need of help. Although she was unwilling, she felt a little pain on her face. She turned around and scooped up some cold water into an iron basin from the wooden bucket beside her. After a quick wash of her face, she carefully took the oyster out of the pot.
A basin about the size of five Daisy’s faces was placed in front of Clare. The rising steam was mixed with the unique smell of seafood. Clare didn’t have to taste it to know that these oysters must be very fresh.
Daisy was not in the mood to take care of him. She said indifferently, “You can leave after you finish eating.” After that, she went into her room and closed the door with an expressionless face.
Clare smiled and took the oysters from the basin. He slowly began to taste the delicious food. However, Daisy, who was on the bed, could not calm down. After thinking about it, she felt that there was something wrong with her attitude. After all, Clare was lost. Also, her comprehension ability was poor, so it was not his fault. After giving herself a lesson in her heart, she got out of bed and put her ear against the door, trying to listen to what was going on outside. However, it was terribly quiet outside. Daisy was nervous and opened the door without thinking.
There was no sign of Clare in the kitchen and the basin also disappeared. Daisy did not know how to explain her feelings at that moment. She only knew that she wanted to curse.
Before Daisy could react, the door behind her opened with a loud bang. Her heart instantly started thumping. The thing that she had been worried about the most had happened. She turned her head mechanically and was stunned.
Sloan tugged on Clare’s sleeve with an ingratiating smile on his face. He was drunk, and the smell of alcohol coming from his body disgusted Daisy. She even felt that the hand holding Clare’s sleeve was so dirty that it made her want to puke.
“Daisy, why didn’t you call uncle out when we had guests at home?” Sloan clutched Clare’s sleeve tightly, afraid that he would slip away in the next second.
Without saying a word, Daisy stepped forward and pulled Clare behind her. She stood in front of Clare with a determined and fearless expression on her face.
“Uncle, it’s late. You’d better go back to sleep.” Daisy didn’t hide her disgust for Sloan in her words. Even Clare, who had been emotionless, was a little surprised.
Sloan glanced at Clare, snorted, and swaggered towards his room, muttering as he walked. He spoke in dialect, so Clare couldn’t understand him. However, Daisy knew that he was scolding her for being ill-bred, but she didn’t care. She closed the door tightly and looked at Clare with a sullen expression. “How did you let him see you?”
Clare explained slowly, “When I was eating oysters, a man suddenly walked up to me. I don’t understand what he said, but I don’t think he’s a bad person, so I went with him.”
Daisy looked at Clare’s innocent face and was furious. Before she could speak, Clare asked, “Are you angry?”
Her anger was suddenly extinguished by his gentle words. Daisy took a deep breath and said calmly, “No.” Then, she suddenly realized something. “Did he take those oysters away?”
Clare nodded without any hesitation. “Yes.”
Daisy clenched her fists, kicked the bed hard, and asked grumpily, “Does he look like a good person?”
Clare was amazed. “I don’t know.”
This time, Daisy was no longer angry. She calmed down and said, “You can share my bed tonight.”
There was finally an expression on Clare’s face. It was just that there were too many emotions, and Daisy could not guess what he was thinking. Daisy had been used to being careless since she was a child. She did not have any concept of the distinction between sexes. She was also playing with the boys in the fishing village, so she did not know that Clare would be shy because of this.
Daisy climbed into the bed and prepared the blanket. Looking at the blushing Clare, who was standing motionlessly to the side, she asked impatiently, “Aren’t you coming up?”
Clare nodded, but his movements were still very slow. He first held the bedside and sat down, but then he stopped moving. Daisy sat cross-legged behind him and looked at his back. After a while, she realized that he might be shy. She said straightforwardly, “Don’t worry, I won’t touch you.”
Clare was shocked visibly. After about five seconds, he finally retracted his leg and adjusted his sitting position according to Daisy’s voice. “Which side should I sleep on?”
Daisy pointed to the left side of her, and then realized that he couldn’t see, so she said, “On your right.”
“Oh.” After receiving the order, Clare quickly got into the quilt on the right side. He did not even take off his clothes and even covered his head tightly with the quilt. Daisy felt a little helpless and said, “It’s hot here. Are you sure you don’t want to take off your clothes?”
Clare’s vague voice came from under the quilt. “I’m cold.”
Daisy didn’t insist. Anyway, it wasn’t her who was hot. “Do as you please. I’m going to sleep.”
