Branch One Hundred and Seventy One
Xavier went upstairs to check on Jessica and she was already awake sitting upright on the bed looking around. He rushed go her side and touched her hair gently.
“How do you feel?” he asked and she looked up at him and blinked multiple times.
“I think I do feel better,” she said.
He took his hand off her head and walked to where her leg rested. He touched it as if he was afraid it would wake up a giant monster if he was not careful.
“How does this feel?” he asked pressing on her ankle gently.
She tried to hide the pain she felt by digusining it with a yawn. “That hurt didn’t it?” he asked and she nodded.
“I told you that we should not leave the hospital until you felt better but you assured me you were doing better already. What are we going to do about this sprain?” he ranted in questions.
She sighed and shifted uncomfortably in the bed. “It is just a little sprain and I am sure I will be fine with the painkillers prescribed for me and with a little exercise too” she explained.
She felt like he was making a fuss out of the situation. She was fine. It was not the first time in her life that she had a sprain, she had been in the same situation before and still had to go to work and work all day standing because her work demanded it from her.
“I don’t think seeing your hurt goes down well with me,” Xavier said sitting on the bed and lifting her fert t out on his lap.
She curled her feet and tried to drop them down or raise them to herself but his hands stopped her before she could go any further.
“What is wrong?” he asked running his fingers across her ankle gently. The action sent shivers down her spine that she was not sure if she was entirely comfortable with. On the one hand, she was glad he was doing it and on the other hand she wanted to beg him to stop.
“My feet are dirty” she sprouted out immediately for lack of a better excuse.
“What?”
“I was in that dirty place for a long time and I think my feet must be dirty,” she said back.
She was not sure if the words she was stringing together made sense. She was sure they did not make sense but she had to say something.
“So?”
“So, you could get sick, I better wash up,” she said pushing herself off from resting on the bed frame. She smiled at him.
“You can barely walk straight and you want to go stand for long under the shower because you think you are dirty?” he asked as he firmly held her legs.
“It would not be a long shower. I just need to wash up quickly and I will be back”
“I can not let you go anywhere” he murmured.
“Xavier,” she said in a tone that sounded playful and serious at the same time.
“What if I join you then?”
“What?”Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
“You will never get used to me saying things like that would you?”
“So you were teasing me?” she asked throwing her head backward a bit.
“It’s always fun to tease you, you always respond”
She felt her mouth go in a pout as she crossed her hand over her chest. “But on a more serious note, I think I need to have my bath,” she said struggling to free her leg from his grip.
“Take me with you,” he said like a child who was being denied something he so desperately wanted.
“Stop it, Xavier,” she said quietly as if they were not the only ones in the room and she was ashamed to let anyone hear them.
“Take me with you” he echoed his first statement again.
She stood up and felt a surge of pain rush down and settle at her ankle. She tried her best to control the pain she felt at that moment.
“See you are not fine, you need me to help you,” he said when he saw the reaction on her face for her stepping on the leg.
“I am…” she began to talk but was cut off by the ringing of his phone. He sighed in annoyance. He was making significant progress with her and the caller had to ruin everything
When he looked down on his phone screen he noticed that it was Richard. It was an important call indeed.
“Is it important?” she asked as she watched his eyes dart at the call and at her back.
“I can always call him back” he answered.
“So it is important?” she asked again when he refrained from giving a direct answer.
“Well, yeah,” he said shrugging. “I can just put a call back through as soon as I am sure that you are clean” he adds with a wink.
“Xavier, get the call now and I would be in the bathroom washing away the disgust from those men earlier today” she replied as she tried her best to quietly walk towards the door of the closet leading to the bathroom.
He was going to follow her but he knew that Richard’s call meant that the bodyguards were now around.
“Hello?” he said standing up and walking out of the room
“Mr. Delgado, my men have just informed me that they have arrived at your estate”
“Okay then, I would go immediately to see them,” he said before cutting off the call.
He called the main gate to let the men in after running intense security checks on them to ensure that they were not coming in with anything harmful.
He climbed down the stairs and went to wait outside to meet with the bodyguards. When they appeared in his line of vision he was glad that he took the chance with them and brought them as bodyguards.
He was sure they would do a good job.
